Mayor Saidai Duraisamy said that the Ripon Buildings annexe, to the rear of the prominent building, has been renamed Amma Maaligai. He made this announcement at the Corporation Council meeting on Thursday.

Civil work on the 1.5 lakh-sq ft Amma Maaligai has been completed at a cost of Rs. 23 crore. The building has parking space for 50 cars and 150 motorcycles.

A 500-seat auditorium, 100-seat conference hall and 70 toilets with facilities for persons with disability are also part of the structure. Water-cooled air-conditioning and roof heat reflective tiles with double glazed design will reduce energy consumption by 20 percent.

The building has been designed in a post-modern style, with some elements of traditional architecture. Some design elements would suit the colonial-style architecture of the Ripon Buildings.

All departments of Chennai Corporation will shift to Amma Maaligai soon. The offices of the Mayor and Commissioner will continue to be in Ripon Buildings.
