Chennai Corporation ready to welcome monsoon

After a high-level meeting, the Chennai Corporation said it is ready to face the north east monsoon. Every September, the corporation holds a meeting with other government agencies to formulate plans for the monsoon season. The heads of each of the departments— state highways, slum clearance, fisheries, meteorological department and Metrowater deliberate on preventive measures already taken and those yet to be put in place.
A corporation official said the number of inundated areas in the city has come down from 900 to 190. "We have decided to complete all drainage and desilting work before the monsoon to allow the flow of water."
The civic body urged PWD to complete all pending drainage works in areas like Velacherry and Porur. "We would not allow any other civic works during monsoon" he said. It also instructed the highways department to take preventive steps to stop water logging on stretches like Tiruvottiyur High Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Salai.
