Thanks to the heavy rains, Poondi reservoir level up!

The water level in the Poondi reservoir, one of the main sources of drinking water for Chennai City, has been rising continuously due to the heavy rains in the last few days.

To augment the drinking water requirement, water from the river Krishna was allowed to flow into Tamil Nadu with the opening of the Kandaleru dam.

Krishna waters reached Chennai outskirts, Oothukottai ‘zero point’, at 4.00 PM on 17th October. It reached the Poondi reservoir the next day. Initially, the water came at the speed of 50 Cft (Cubic Feet) and gradually picked up speed to the level of 117 & Cft & then 129 Cft.

Further, with the heavy rains over the last 2 days, the reservoir level has been rising rapidly.

Poondi reservoir has been receiving water at 143 Cft from Krishna River and 722 Cft from rainwater.

The level of the reservoir was 18’ on 17th October. Presently, it is 19.20’.

Water is being pumped out to Puzhal lake at 123 Cft and at 10 Cft for purification.

The rainfall in the Poondi reservoir is 36.6 mm leading to the rise in reservoir water level.
