Delay in GPS meters due to RK Nagar by-election

Posted on: 26/Jun/2015 11:53:19 AM
The government has brought standardization of auto fares recently. To incorporate the new fare and set up GPS meters in all autos, a sum of Rs 80 crore was allotted in August 2013. Following this, the new rule was implemented in autos across Chennai.

The regional transport sector officers took measures to standardize fares of nearly 71,470 autos across the city. According to the new rating system, for the first 1.8 km, Rs 25 was fixed. This involved vigorous efforts and practices to bring into practice.

Auto drivers were instructed to tune their existing meters for the newly revised charges until they receive new ones. However, most of the auto drivers do not seem to use their meters. They instead charge at random. This issue is met by the officials with necessary actions being taken. When complaints about these are given, the respective auto driver will be charged a fine amount.

Setting up of GPS meters in all autos is outsourced to a company and they are told to provide 72,000 such meters. However, owing to RK Nagar by-election, there are hassles in giving out tender for fixing GPS meters. Hence, tender arrangements will be done after the RK Nagar by-election gets over.
