Food we consume are of varied types, but we can very easily categorize these food items into two types that are good and bad, which means food that is good on our body and harmful on the other hand. The challenge here is to choose the right food that suits our body and proves good on us. Here is a debate on soy sauce which is widely believed to be a healthy dish, but actually not. Soy sauce is a widely used ingredient in the culinary world.

Soy sauce is a mix of soy legumes, salt, brine, roasted wheat grains, Aspergillus fungi, etc. This is a fermented and aged product

There are various other food products prepared using soya legumes. All these are rich in protein. Other processed products of soy are soy milk, soy oil, tofu, soya nuggets, etc.Apart from the uses of soy sauce in Asian cuisines and international cuisines, the sauce is known for its extraordinary taste that treats our taste buds every time.

Soy sauce that is fermented contains large amounts of chemical called Isoflavones. This largely interrupts the secretion of estrogen.

Below are some of the risk factors of soy sauce:

·         Breast cancer – the isoflavones present in the sauce is known to catalyze proliferation of cancerous cells in breasts. It is also said to interfere in the regular menstrual cycle

·         Thyroid – soy sauce contains gitrogens which is a type of isoflavones. This synthesizes thyroid hormones and causes hypothyroidism. This is one of the potential effects of soy sauce

·         Sperm count – soy sauce increases levels of estrogen in male and brings down the sperm count in them. Hence excessive consumption of soy sauce is harmful on men

·         Neurological function – during the preparation of soy sauce, glutamic acid is formed. This is highly toxic. MSG is added extra to soy sauce in order to improve its flavor and taste
