TRAI: Emergency Call Number throughout the country - 112

Posted on: 01/Oct/2015 4:44:48 PM
Central government has accorded approval to use 112 as the Emergency Call Number throughout the country as recommended by TRAI (Telecommunications regulatory Authority of India).

Hence, this number will be introduced in service throughout the country shortly.

At present, in India, 100 is the call number for Police Help, 108 for Medical Help, and other numbers, 101, 102 etc are being used as emergency call numbers for different purposes.

In USA, the number for any type of emergency is 911. In England, it is 999.

Hence, TRAI put up the recommendation to change the current system of different numbers for police, fire, medical, accident, and emergency help by introducing a single number. It had chosen 112 as the number.

TRAI has also recommended 112 to be used throughout the country.

It had also recommended that the currently used different numbers can be pushed down as supplementary numbers and even if they are pressed for calling, it should be routed to 112.

TRAI had recommended that though this facility has not been extended to call from cell-phones, this faculty must be extended to cell-phone for all emergency purposes.

Central government has approved this recommendation. Hence, it has announced that the notice Press 112 for emergency help will be released shortly.

This has been confirmed by the ministry of telecommunications.
