Laying of additional (5th & 6th) tracks between Central & Basin Bridge to be completed by 2017

The project of laying additional tracks between Chennai Central & Basin Bridge Stations commenced in 2014.

The project was taken up in order to reduce the train traffic congestion and additional tracks - 5th & 6th lines - for a distance of 3 km were taken up during 2014.

Southern Railway General manager Mr. Vasishta Jori informed that this will be completed by 2017.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi yesterday (Friday, 2nd October), the Railway officials resumed activities under the ‘Clean India’ project in the morning by taking up cleaning activities.

Southern Railway General Manager Mr. Vasishta Jori & Additional General manager Mr. Venlitasamy informed the press reporters that these events will highlight the importance and awareness to keep the railway stations clean among the passengers especially.

The cleaning activities will be continued at Chennai Central and other railway stations. 

The project to set up a 3rd terminal railway station at Tambaram at a cost of Rs. 25 Crores is in progress .

There are some legal cases & problems in land acquisition. However, this has not disturbed the progress of the project. Construction work will be extended for 1 year. In order to reduce the train traffic congestion, the laying of additional 5th & 6th Track between Chennai Central & Basin Bridge Railway stations covering a distance of 3 km commenced in 2014 and will be completed by 2017. There are no financial constraints in completing this project.

Apart from cleanliness in railway stations & trains, equal importance is accorded to passenger safety. Railway Police & Railway Protection Force are jointly operating to ensure service on this front. 

The decision to run special trains for the occasion of Deepavali festival will be taken as per demands.
