Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurated a new scheme, Amma Drinking Water Scheme, to facilitate even the people from the poor sector can afford to buy drinking water.

With the main purpose of making drinking water affordable to even the poorest sections of the society, the government has been introducing various schemes such as integrated drinking water scheme, river/stream based drinking water scheme, and special power-driven scheme, etc.

41 integrated drinking water supply schemes along with other schemes have been implemented by the government in the last 56 months at a cost of Rs. 7324.34 Crores.

Another 39 schemes are in progress at a cost of Rs. 6602.78 Crores

With the above schemes, it has been established that the purpose of providing affordable drinking water even to the poorest sections of the society has been effectively implemented.

On the basis of the Chief Minister`s Order, drinking water supply schemes with reverse osmosis based water purification systems are being set up in 69 village residential areas and 30 city residential centres.

In Chennai metro City, people who can afford are buying drinking water processed under the reverse osmosis system. The poorer sections of the society also wish to buy and use the same.

In order to fulfill this desire from the poor section of the society, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had decided to implement a new scheme, known as Amma Drinking Water Scheme.

In the 1st phase of implementation of this scheme, 100 locations where mostly poor section are residents will be chosen in Chennai Metro City where water purification centres with reverse osmosis will be set up.

These water purification centres will have a capacity to purify 200 litres of water per hour. The capacity will be adjusted as per the demand in the area.

This purified water will be tested and will be certified for good quality.

For the residents of the selected 100 localities in Chennai Metro City, 20 litres of drinking water will be supplied every day to each family free of cost.

Arrangements will be made for these poorer sections of the society to get the drinking water easily from these automatic water purification centres.

The government is confident that this will pave the way for mineral drinking water to be affordable even to the poorest sections of the society.
