Now, a mobile app to report child abuse

Posted on: 19/Feb/2016 6:08:14 PM
A new mobile app called Child Rights Monitor (CRM) has been launched for Android. This will enable users to report cases of child abuse. Also, users can get information on child rights and request and provide any necessary support. The app has been developed by the Mary Anne Charity Trust (MACT). It can be downloaded from the Google Play store and is available in both English and Tamil.

Says a senior official of MACT, Users can click a picture or send a voice message if they see a child being abused. The information is sent to the concerned agency and local area volunteers will reach the place and rescue the child.

The information from the app will be received by trained volunteers at a call centre at the MACT office in Kodambakkam. These volunteers have access to a state wide database off child care NGOs and private homes.

The official said, The message will be forwarded to child helpline 1098 or concerned agencies. The identity of the child will not be revealed under any circumstance.

An official from the United Nations Children`s Fund (UNICEF) launched the app. Speaking about the app, he said, Corporal punishment at schools and within homes should be reported. We have to take a serious look at the way we deal with corporal punishment, both in schools and in our homes. Forty countries have banned corporal punishment at home. We have to do the same in our country too. States have to become child-friendly and this can happen only if every citizen becomes a child rights ambassador.
