Govt postpones 4-hr power cuts in City

Posted on: 20/Jun/2011 11:56:50 PM
The government has decided to put on hold the proposed four-hour load shedding which was to be implemented from Tuesday. While the Tamil Nadu Electricty Board attributed it to technical reasons, sources said the power cut was shelved due to political compulsions.

On Sunday, TNEB announced one hour outage every four hours in different areas of the city and suburbs on a rotational basis throughout the day. The state power utility claimed that the decision was taken due to a 300 MW shortage which would occur due to the shutdown of the Nellore-Alamathi power transmission line.

The load shedding was necessary to connect a power plant at Vallur, which is a joint venture between TNEB and NTPC, with the inter-state grid. But on Monday evening, TNEB announced that it had withdrawn the proposal and would be announced the new load shedding schedule soon.
