Chennai event - Tribal & Folk Art: Exhibition (7th May - 15th May)

There will be an exhibition cum workshop on Gond painting, a well know tribal and folk art form from Madhya Pradesh. The artwork is intrinsically used to fill the surface with decorative traditional patterns and motifs. The Gond tribal community is one of the central India`s largest indigenous communities and their art is an expression of the everyday quest for life. The other two tribal art forms to be displayed are Kurumba and Chittara. Chittara is an art form of the Deevaru community from Karnataka where they draw intricate patterns that represent the auspicious ceremony and rituals of life, symbolized in geometric patterns. Kurumba art is a unique tribal art practiced in the region of Nilgiris, Tamilnadu. The art are primarily ritualistic, describing various facets of tribal life in the remote forests of the Nilgiris. 

In addition, the premium art gallery and museum will showcase a session on leather puppet making, a traditional art form from Andhra Pradesh. Leather crafting is the practice of making leather into craft objects of daily needs by using colouring and shaping techniques. The craft shares an ancient connect with Indian culture.

The workshops will take place on May 7, 8, 14 and 15.

Fee: Rs 2,000 per workshop.
