This June records the highest rainfall in the past two decades

Chennaites seem to enjoy a cool and pleasant weather this year. There is something more to feel enthralled this month as it is the wettest June in the past twenty years.
The temperature is down by 5 degrees with murky skies and moderate showers. The temperature recorded in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam aer 30.5 degree Celsius and 30.3 degree Celsius respectively.
Many areas including Ram Nagar and West Mambalam were seen waterlogged with uprooted trees due to rain showers overnight. Waterlogging in places including CTH road, Padi, Poonamallee high road, Kodambakkam, etc were cleared by the Chennai Corporation staff members. Sources from the meteorological department says that the brewing weather system above Bay of Bengal has caused rain showers in the city. In the west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, off south Odisha and northern part of Andhra Pradesh coast, there prevails air cyclonic circulation. Due to this and one more upper air circulation, there are changes in weather condition across the state.
The director of Regional meteorological Centre, S. Stella stated that parts of Nilgiris and ghat areas in Coimbatore are likely to receive heavy downpour for the following two days.
There will be cloudy sky and incessant showers in Chennai on Friday with a maximum temperature of 30 degree Celsius on Thursday, today.
So far, about 140 mm of rainfall is recorded in Chennai in June which makes the month the wettest in the past twenty years. It was in June 2010 that the highest was recorded earlier with 136.7 mm rainfall.
According to weathermen, rain showers may begin to deplete from today and continue to downpour from 3rd or 4th July.
In June 1991, there was monthly downpour of 216 mm in Chennai. The highest rainfall was recorded in 1996 when there was 697.5 mm rainfall. This June month of 2016 is one such year recording the highest volume of rain.
