The Chennai Corporation is set to build a wholesale fish market at the cost of Rs. 8 Crores to provide the citizens good quality and tasty fish at reasonably low prices. People fond of eating fish are euphoric over this news.

Currently, seafood is being sold wholesale in Nadukkuppam, Lighthouse area, Vaanagaram, Chintadripet, and Red Hills. The retail fish sellers in Chennai city and its suburbs come to these areas to buy fish wholesale.

As fishing is not that successful in the Chennai coastal area, fish are brought from areas such as Nagappattinam, Thoothukudi, Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Andhra, Odisha, Karnataka, Goa, and Kerala. However, there have been complaints that the prices are usually high.

The high price prohibits people from middle class and low-income groups from buying fish. In a measure to overcome this problem, the Chennai  Corporation has decided to set up a wholesale fish market in Chennai Kotturpuram.

68 shops will be installed. Fish from various parts of coastal Tamil Nadu will be sold here wholesale from 1.00 AM till 6.00 AM to the retail traders.

The wholesale fish market in Kotturpuram is being constructed in an area of more than 10 acres owned by the Chennai Corporation in Kotturpuram. The construction started last month. The officials informed that the construction of shops will be completed in the next month.

A corporation official explained that if the new wholesale fish market becomes popular among the public, similar wholesale fish markets will be set up in different parts of the city. The shops will be opened before the local elections.

As fish weighing several tons will be available in a single place, the effluent water will be purified in a plant to be released in Adyar river.
