No territorial boundaries with the University of Madras

The University of Madras has decided to make a boost in its revenue generation by setting aside all territorial limits and allowing admission for students from other states as well. UGC has so far been restricting distance education program from outside the jurisdiction in specific states. As the distance education program contributes to major part of revenue, it has been opposed by the University of Madras for long time.

This was followed by a writ petition by the registrar of the University of Madras, opposing such territorial limits in Madras high court. During last week, an interim relief was granted for admitting and enrolling students in such distance education programs without any territorial limits for the academic year 2016-17 and also the other subsequent years. The admission process was also initiated subsequently.

The admission process for 2016-17 is now started. The university website carries the prospectus on it, said M. Ravichandran, the director of Institute of Distance Education, University of Madras.

As of now, about 97 programs including 27 undergraduate courses, 18 professional courses 21 post graduate courses, and 21 diploma courses are being offered at the Institute of Distance education. There are 19 certificate courses offered too.

This university has got 23 study centres present in six states and Puducherry and New Delhi. There were 27,000 admissions received with the IDE last year. Nearly 20 percent of this is from other states, said a syndicate member.
