A new study claims that people suffering from obesity can easily fight heart disease by practicing exercise and diet in the right balance. This largely helps them in shedding kilos. The study results are published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It suggests combination of exercise and healthy eating to achieve healthy heart.

Men and women who have excessive body weight need to achieve modest weight loss. This keeps them protected from cardiovascular diseases, irrespective of how you lose weight – with diet, or exercise, or both, said Edward Weiss, the Associate Professor of Saint Louis University.

This study involved examining 52 overweighing men and women. They were divided into three groups: those who exercised dieted and practiced both. About 7 percent of their total body weight was reduced in 12 to 14 weeks time period. Participants who dieted or exercised had to reduce food intake of the range 20 percent and make 20 percent increase in physical activity. On the other hand, those who did both were made to reduce intake by 10 percent and increase activity by 10 percent.

The researchers then studied the ways in which these changes impacted blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and heart rate all of which are clear indications of cardiovascular health.

By studying so, they found that improvement in cardiovascular disease was equally possible in these three strategies. Practicing just one will not be that effective.

The lifetime risk of cardiovascular disease will reduce by 10 percent for those who dieted, exercised and did both.

Weiss states that we need focus both on exercise and diet so as to enjoy good health. Each of these has got their own health benefits.
