Flights to Colombo to be rescheduled from January 2017

Posted on: 31/Aug/2016 2:31:00 PM
To enable smooth repair work on the runway of the Bandaranaiyike International Airport in Colombo, day flights to the Sri Lankan capital will be rescheduled for three months starting January 2017. SriLankan Airlines has cancelled its services from Colombo to various destinations in Southern India, including Chennai, Trichy, Kochi and Bengaluru. According to sources, Airlines and travel agents have been informed about the runway closure between 9am and 4.30pm.

Speaking about this, travel agents said, The advise is about flight rescheduling and booking of tickets for January. Only one flight is likely to get rescheduled in Chennai. People who take connecting flights to Male and Singapore may have to book via other airports. Thousands of people hailing from Trichy are working in the Gulf. Since there is no direct connectivity to the Gulf, they rely on SriLankan Airlines as Colombo is the only transit point for them to proceed to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Daman, Jeddah, Riyadh, Doha, Bahrain, Kuwait and Muscat from there.

Airport authorities said, A majority of the flights to Colombo are at night. A few departures during the time are preferred by passengers from Chennai and Trichy for onward connection. As Colombo is an important transit point for passengers who travel from Trichy airport which does not have direct flights to many international destinations, the cancellation or rescheduling would largely affect them. As of now, Sri Lankan Airlines is operating two flights between Colombo and Trichy daily.
