Northeast monsoon rain season delayed: Prospects of rain before Deepavali

Posted on: 24/Oct/2016 9:50:33 AM
Tamil Nadu receives more rain during the northeast monsoon season as compared to the southwest monsoon season. During the Northeast monsoon season, more low-pressure depression zones and cyclonic format form over the Bay of Bengal and cause good rains.

Last year, during the Northeast Monsoon season, there was an unprecedented rain over the last 100 years when it rained 50 cm in a single day leading to heavy floods and damages. This year, the southwest monsoon rainy season fell short  of expectations.

In this scenario, there has been a delay in the onset of the northeast monsoon season. Northeast monsoon season was expected to start by 20th October. To justify this, a depression zone also formed over the central east Bay of Bengal. However, it transformed into a storm and moved in the Northeast direction towards Andaman and Myanmar.

So, there has been a delay in the onset of the northeast monsoon season. In the climate change following a depression formed , and due to the thermal convection, it has rained in South Tamil Nadu over the last few days.

So, there are no prospects of rain in the next 4 days till 27th October. According to the meteorological department officials, only after 27th October, there are prospects of rain during the Deepavali period.

For the next few days till 27th October, there may be light rains in a few places in North Tamil Nadu. It may heavy rain in 1 or 2 places in South Tamil Nadu.
