What are the documents needed for Passport?

The most important documents issued by the central government of India is Passport. It clearly certifies the identity and citizenship of the document holder. It allows the holder to fly across countries.

For applying fresh passports in India, the applicant has to submit a number of documents. 
Below is a comprehensive list of the same.

List of documents needed for fresh application of Passport:

The list given below has all the documents to be submitted for applying for a General passport under varied categories:

Address proof: You may submit any one of the below mentioned documents as proof of address:
  • Voters ID with your present residential address
  • Phone bill with your present residential address
  • Aadhar card
  • Water tax bill carrying your present residential address
  • Electricity payment bill with your present address
  • Your spouse’s passport
  • Passport of your (applicant’s) parents
  • Gas passbook with your present residential address
  • Bank passbook
  • In case of rented house, submit the rental agreement
  • Income Tax Assessment order
  • A certificate received from your employer on a letterhead carrying the seal and signature
Age proof: Below are some of the documents you may submit as age proof:
  • Birth certificate that is provided by the municipality authority or other authorized offices
  • School or secondary school leaving certificate.
  • Certificate sworn before a magistrate.
List of documents needed for Tatkal passport:

Here is a list of all the documents you need for applying for Tatkal passport. You may submit any of the below mentioned documents as address proof for passport.
  • Election ID card with your current residential address
  • Aadhaar card
  • Phone bill with your current residential address
  • Gas passbook with your current residential address
  • Bank passport
  • In case of rented house, share the rental agreement
  • Income Tax Assessment order

List of Documents needed for passport application for minors:

To all the parents who want to apply for passport for your minor kid, below are the documents to be necessarily furnished.
  • Present residential address carrying the name of parent(s)
  • Parents passport as original or self-attested copies should be submitted at the Passport Seva Kendra when either of them have passport
  • All documents submitted for the minor applicant should be attested by parents
For minors aging lesser than 18 years, the applicant will be eligible for non-ECR passport in case if emigration check is not mandatory.

All original documents with photocopies of originals that are self-attested should be submitted at Passport Seva Kendra.

A declaration affirming that you have enclosed all the necessary documents as per Annexure D

List of documents needed for date of birth for passport application:

New rules for passport application was announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) recently so as to simplify the entire process. Intending to streamline the method and make it more transparent and easier, MEA has taken interesting measures regarding the date of birth category of passport application.

Earlier, no change in date of birth was allowed after 5 years of issuing passport. Before this latest announcement, applicants born before 26th January 1989 had to provide proof for date of birth. However, according to the amended rules, individuals can submit digital birth certificates and this will still be considered as valid date of birth proof.

So, according to the new rule, here is the list of all documents that can be submitted as proof for passport application:
  • School leaving certificate or transfer certificate issued by authorized educational institution
  • PAN number from the Income Tax Department
  • Aadhar number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India
  • Driving license from the Transport department
  • Voter id or election photo id from the election commission of India
  • Pay pension order or service record carrying DOB
  • Birth certificate from the authorized body as per the Registration of Birth and Deaths Act, 1969
  • Policy bond from the public life insurance firm

List of documents needed for diplomatic passport:

When you need an official or diplomatic passport, you ought to submit the below mentioned documents. Submitting one copy of each of the following in the list would suffice:  
  • An official id card of the applicant or from the head of office
  • Certificate issued by the head of the office
  • Official letter of request from the forwarding officer
  • If required, provide PMO or political clearance certificate
In case of reissue applications of official or diplomatic passport, when this case is under the custody of Ministry of External Affairs, you will get the original safe custody or surrender certificate. When the ministry of external affairs cancels this, you will get original cancellation certificate.

Certificate of case study for ordinary passport:

When an official decides to retire before 6 months of the application date, the diplomatic or official passport should be surrendered to the undertaking office soon after he or she returns.

Order of submitting documents:

The applicants must ensure that the documents are aligned in the following order:
  • Online application print copy
  • Political or PMO clearance
  • ID card copy
  • Certificate from the Head of Office
  • Forwarding officer’s request
  • Other documents
List of documents needed for reissue of passport in India:

When one needs a completely new passport, a new reissue has to be given. A booklet with the new passport number will then be sent. In case of expiry of passport, loss of valid passport or stolen passport or when the pages have exhausted or when it gets damaged or when there is change of personal details, there is reissue of passport given.

So, in case of reissue of passport, you need to submit the following documents:

Documents needed in case of expiration of old passport:
  • Expired passport original of old one
  • First and last two pages of the old passport (Self-attested)
  • ECR or non-ECR page (self-attested)
  • Validity extension page (self-attested) in case of short validity passports
Documents needed in case of exhaustion of old passport:
  • Old passport original
  • First and last two pages of the old passport (self-attested)
  • ECR and non-ECR page (self-attested)
  • Validity extension page (self-attested) in case if the validity is for short period
Documents needed in case of renewal of passport for minors:
  • Old passport original with the following documents (self-attested)
  • First and last 2 pages of passport
  • Non-ECR and ECR page
  • Page of Observation, if there is any
  • Authority and validity extension page, if there is any
  • Declaration confirming that the details enclosed with the application comply with Annexure D
  • Passport of parents (original and self-attested)
Note that parents are eligible of attesting documents of minor applicants

Documents needed in case of loss of passport application:
  • Affidavit providing information regarding details of stolen passport
  • Police report original
  • ECR and non-ECR page (self-attested)
  • Validity extension page (self-attested)
Any of the following address proof can be submitted
  • Election ID card with current residential address
  • Aadhaar card
  • Phone bill with present residential address
  • Gas passbook
  • Bank passport
  • Rental agreement in case of rented house
  • Income Tax Assessment order

You can submit any of the following as age proof:
  • Birth certificate got from the municipal authority or office authorized body for issuing the same
  • School leaving or secondary school leaving certificate
  • Certificate sworn before a magistrate
Below are the documents needed in case of application of passport reissue in case of damage of passport
  • Old passport original
  • First and last two pages of the passport (self-attested)
  • ECR or non-ECR page (self-attested)
  • Validity extension page (self-attested) in case if the passport is of short validity
  • Affidavit explaining how the passport got damaged
For age proof, you may submit any of the below:
  • Birth certificate got from the municipal authority or office authorized body for issuing the same
  • School leaving or secondary school leaving certificate
  • Certificate sworn before a magistrate
Passport reissuing application in case of corrections in existing one
  • Old passport original
  • First and last two pages of the passport (self-attested)
  • ECR or non-ECR page (self-attested)
  • Validity extension page (self-attested) in case if the passport is of short validity
Furthermore, any one of the below is necessary:
  • Marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriages
  • A joint affidavit from wife and husband along with a together photograph
  • Affidavit according to Annexure K
  • Passport of spouse (self-attested)
List of documents needed for passport renewal:

When the passport validity gets expired, you need to renew the same. For this, you will have the same passport number retained. There will only be change in validity. Below are the documents needed for the same:
  • Old passport original
  • First and last two pages of the passport (self-attested)
  • ECR or non-ECR page (self-attested)
  • Page of observation if made by the Passport Issuing Authority (self-attested)
  • Validity extension page for short validity passport (self-attested)
  • Documents that sorts out the cause of issuance of short validity passport
Remember:
  • For minor applicants, it is enough if the address proof of parents is submitted
  • When you submit ration card or election id card or Aadhar card as address proof, this should be accompanied by any other additional address proof
  • When the applicant has date of birth after 26th January 1989, it is mandatory to submit birth certificate
  • For minor applicants, Annexure H is mandatory
  • For government employees who are applying for passport, annexure B & M should be submitted
