The Southern Region gas-tank lorry-owners Association has announced an indefinite strike from tomorrow (Monday, 12th February) demanding an early implementation of regional leasing contract.

This strike may lead to the difficult prospect of lpg gas shortage in 6 states including Tamil Nadu.

The Southern Region Gas-tanker Lorry Owners’ Association operates from Tamil Nadu with Namakkal as its headquarters. The gas-tanker lorry owners from the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, Andhra, and Telangana are members of this Association.

The Oil Corporations announce a lease-agreement every 3 years with the gas-tanker lorry owners. This time, the lease agreement has been announced valid for 5 years. Further, the central ministry of petroleum announced that instead of the usual lease agreement on a regional basis, the lease agreement will be with the individual states.

The gas-tanker lorry owners raised a very strong objection and protest against this decision. In this situation, in order to decide the next steps of action to be taken, the Southern Region gas-tanker Lorry Owners’ Association conducted a meeting in Namakkal yesterday (Saturday, 10th February)  headed by the president of the Association, Ponnambalam.

The president of the Association informed after the meeting that the oil corporations have declared that they will not go back to the old leasing procedure. The leasing contract date has also been announced by the Oil Corporations.

Insisting on the view that this change state-wise leasing contract system will very adversely affect the life system of the gas-tanker lorry owners, the Association has decided to go on an indefinite strike from tomorrow (Monday, 12th February) demanding that the new state-wise leasing contract should be cancelled and the old system restored.
