Fault in the transmission line from Manali causes blackout in south Chennai

Issues regarding continuous power supply during the summer season are never ending. In the recent times we have been hearing news regarding lack of power supply in many places in Chennai.

On Monday, 30th of April 2018, many southern Chennai areas did not have power supply due to fault in the transmission line from Manali. This has grabbed the attention of many now. At around 11 am on Monday, the transmission line bringing power from north Chennai to Mylapore broke down. In just 15 minutes of time this issue was solved by the staffs and they re-routed power from through Basin Bridge. Feeder line from Manali has been hit for the first time in this ongoing summer.

Recently a private company punctured underground cables in Royapettah and this caused power cut in south Chennai. There were some assurances given by the Tangedco and they said proper maintenance was carried out at all substations so that any further breakdown would not be there.

According to Mr. Vikram Kapur, Tangedco chairman, Manali-Mylapore feeder line tripped around 11am on Monday but within 15 minutes alternate supply was arranged from the Basin Bridge feeder line. Many places in Chennai such as Mandaveli, Mylapore, Kotturpuram, Adyar, Raja Annamalai Puram and Velachery faced problems due to lack of power supply.

Mr. Ramesh of Velachery spoke about how power was cut and restored later after 30 minutes. He also spoke about how power was not continuous for few minutes and after that it was restored permanently.

He later threw light on the fact that people belonging to Velachery are facing issues regarding power supply almost every night now. The air-conditioners could not be used because out of 3 phases power was present in just one phase.

According to a Tangedco distribution official, orders were issued to all staffs to check the transformers and feeder lines and change them if needed. He also spoke about how even if the load is high line doesn’t trip. During the summer time underground cables plus overhead lines trip due to heavy load. This heavy load is because of increased air-conditioners or air coolers usage. High ambient temperatures outside plus poor transmission line maintenance are other reasons.

According to a power expert, jumpers in transmission lines snap in high temperatures and this take place within and outside the lines. Online patrolling using drones could be done to solve this issue. Loose lines could be detected and further repairing of these loose lines could be done easily.
