B. E. Course cut-off marks likely to come down

The eminent educationists observed that based on the recent results of the +2 Public Examinations, the cut-off marks for pursuing engineering courses such as B. E. will come down.
They observed that the cut-off marks are likely to come down by 2 to 3 marks as compared to the previous year. In other words, the number of students for each cut-off mark of each 0.25 starting from 200/200 will be less as compared to the previous year.
The cut-off marks for pursuing engineering courses is computed based on the marks obtained in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
This year, the details of the students who scored 200/200 subject-wise have not been announced. Still, while comparing the overall +2 marks details, the number of students who scored maximum marks out of the possible 1200 has come down by a long way.
In a similar trend, the number of students who scored aggregates of less than 700 out of 1200 has increased this year. Especially, on the important subject of Chemistry, so essential for the engineering courses, a majority of the students has scored lesser marks.
The details
· Last year, 1171 students had scored more than 1180 marks out of 1200. However, this year, only 231 students have scored more than 1180 out of 1200.
· Last year, 12283 students had scored between 1151 and 1180 marks. This year, only 3847 students are in this category.
· Last year, 14806 students scored between 1126 and 1150 marks. This year, only 8510 students are in this category.
· Last year, 17750 students had scored in the range between 1101 – 1125. This year, only 11739 students are in this range.
· Last year, 95906 students scored between 1001 and 100. This year, only 71368 students are in this category.
· In a similar trend, there is an addition of 60000 students to the group which scored under 700 marks, Last year (2017), 280938 students had scored lea than 700 marks, this year, 347938 students have scored less than 700 marks.
Because of the above reasons, the educationists are certain that the cut-off marks for engineering courses will certainly come down.
Academician Jayaprakash Gandhi shared his observations:
With the release of the +2 results, only 24423 students have scored above 1100 marks out of 1200. This is less when compared to the last year. In a similar vein, the number of students who have scored less than 800 marks has increased. In fact, more than 60% students have scored less than 800 marks.
With the above data, it is very likely that the number of students who had scored 200/200 in different subjects would be far lesser. It seems that this is the main reason why the department of examination has not released the details.
With the situation as explained above, the cut-off marks for pursuing engineering courses are very likely to come down by 2 to 3 marks as compared to the previous year.
Though there may not be any major changes in the cut-off mararks declared by top institutions such as Anna University, Guindy Engineering College, or the PSG College, the cut-off marks for the institutions below this rung will definitely come down.
Another eminent academician, Gajendra Babu, observed that it is rather easy to note that the number of high scorers in the +2 exams has come down quite heavily. When discussing with the college administrators, it is also noted that the number students who scored 200/200 in major subjects have also come down quite heavily. So, there are excellent prospects of the cut-off marks being down this year.
How to calculate cut-off marks?
The procedure for calculating the cut-off marks for the students who had studied Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry to pursue engineering course is already in practice.
As an example, let us take the marks scored by a specific student: Tamil -185, English – 186, Mathematics – 181, Physics – 171, Chemistry – 165, Biology – 176. Total – 1063.
This student can secure admission in MBBS or BDS only based on the marks scored in NEET.
For pursuing the engineering course, the cut-off mark for this student will be calculated based on the marks scored in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
Mathematics – 181/2 – 90.50
Physics - 171/4 – 42.75
Chemistry – 165/4 – 41.25
Cut-off marks – 174.50
Note: As for the merit or rank list for the engineering course, each 0.25 cut-off is rewarded, the cut-off marks cannot be rounded off.
