Kalakshetra Foundation, Music and dance center in Chennai

Kalakshetra was founded in the year 1936, a leading school for Tamil classical dance and music. The schools sponsors may students from disadvantaged backgrounds for the welfare and development of the music and dance art forms.
Kalakshetra was established by Rukmini Devi Arundale for the development of Bharathanaatiyam, a dance form of South India. Inside the premises of the center there is Rukmini Devi Museum started in the memory of the founder and also a craft center to exhibit Kanchipuram-style hand-loom weaving, textile block-printing and the fascinating rare art of kalamkari.
The center is set in a serene land near Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai. The academy primarily focuses on the preservation of south Indian dance and music forms. Wonderful art and craft ideas are shaped here and preserved for the future generation as per the motto of the founder.
