Many road users face difficulties while travelling through the 32km stretch Chennai bypass that connects 4 national highways. Accidents takes place in this stretch as this stretch does not have any light. Now it is revealed that NHAI or National Highway Authority of India would tap solar energy to light up this 32 km stretch of Chennai bypass so that accidents could be avoided.

As per the police belonging to Chennai city, during the night hours, this 32km stretch has been deadly for the users as it was poorly lit. It is important to note that the Chennai bypass connects NH4 (Chennai- Bengaluru), NH-5 (Chennai-Kolkata), NH205 (Chennai-Anantapur) and NH-45 (Chennai- Trichy). Perungalathur to Maduravoyal and Maduravoyal to Madhavaram are the 2 stretches of Chennai bypass. In the first phase of the project as many as 25 solar lights have been installed along the median near Irumbuliyur and toll plaza at Porur. Each panel with 2 lights and 4 batteries cost an amount of Rs 1.75lakhs and the batteries have a backup of 14 hours is known. According to a senior official belonging to NHAI, the department has taken to installation of solar lighting to bring down the fatal accidents after a report was submitted by the police department.

The official later spoke about the addition of 15 more solar lights that would be installed soon in the most accident prone spots along the stretch. Functioning of the solar lights that were installed in the phase-1 would be checked first and then installation of remaining solar lights would be carried out after rectifying the shortcomings. The official later threw light on the timers fixed to these panels and spoke about how they are programmed to turn the lights on at 6pm and switch off at 6am. A proposal has been sent by the local office to the head quarters for the sake of funds to light up the entire stretch. The main objective was to ensure the safety of the people using the road during the night time.

In the year 2017, a report highlighted about poor lighting along the Chennai bypass that resulted in many accidents. This report was submitted by the Chennai city traffic police and the initiative was taken. According to the report given by NHAI to the police department traffic wing as many as 36 people were killed and 158 people were injured in the 152 road accidents along the 32km stretch in 2016. From the month of January in 2017 to July 2017 there were as many as 17 deaths and 43 serious injuries in the 43 accidents along the stretch. Out of those who were killed as many as 25 people lost their lives in the accidents that took place between 6pm to 6am.

It was mentioned in the report that poor lighting was the main reason for many accidents and it turned the road into one of the deadliest for the road users. Making the stretch safe is the main concern now and efforts are taken for that was confirmed by the official.
