Reclaiming dump yards and converting it to parks in Chennai

Posted on: 05/Jan/2019 10:19:34 AM
Sustaining zero waste initiatives are very important and local bodies present in the Chennai city fringes are playing their roles now. The information gathered is these local bodies are implementing bio-mining projects to reclaim dump yards and finally convert these yards into parks and other facilities for the sake of people. It is now brought out that the dump yards present in these localities were not having enough space plus create environmental issues. The Commissionerate of Municipal Administration is implementing the bio-mining projects in local bodies like Avadi and Pammal. This is done as a step to source segregation and setting up of micro-composting units.

From the mounds of garbage useful materials are segregated and this is called as bio-mining. It must be taken into account that this bio-mining involves removal of garbage from dump sites and processing non-recyclable waste to refuse driven fuel for industrial boiler units. Motorised sieve or traw mill is used to separate waste into recyclable and non-recyclable components and silt. For land filling, silt is used. In Avadi in Chennai, this project would begin in the month of February. Machinery would be segregating the garbage into various categories and bio-mining plant would have the machinery. This was as per the officials of CMA.

The main point is the recyclable waste would be sent to the cement factories, recycling units, composting units and waste like discarded clothes, non-recyclable plastics, cotton, cardboard etc would be used to produce refuse-derived fuel. Powering of industrial boilers could be possible by this. This was confirmed by officials. It is important to mention here that a dump yard in Sekkadu is of size 11 acres and this dump yard is used by the Avadi municipality. This yard has got as much as 52,000 metric tonnes of garbage heaped across the 11 acres of land.

The piece of information collected now is source segregation in 80 percent of its area has been implemented by the local body. There were some complaints from the residents regarding door-to-door collection. About 90 metric tonnes of garbage are being generated by the municipality every day. The important point is as nearly 136 battery operated vehicles and about 30 vehicles for collection of garbage would be purchased and this has been confirmed by the officials.

Official later explained about how 20 to 30 percent of garbage generated every day is being transported to the dump yard and how source segregation was not implemented fully. The local body is hoping to reclaim the dump site in a year as the bio-mining plant has got capacity to tackle up to 400 tonnes a day. The official later revealed how they have got plans to convert dump site to parks and hinted that staff quarters might also be set up.
