Emphasising on their various demands, the employees unions from the central and state government are on strike for 2 days yesterday (Tuesday. 8th January) and today (Wednesday, 9th January). However, the state of Tamil Nadu has not been affected much by this strike.

Buses and autos are operating as usual in the state.

The unions of the central government employees commenced their 2-day strike yesterday (8th January). Their 10-point demand includes various issues such as the withdrawal of the new pension scheme announced, all the vacant posts must be immediately filed, etc.

Various government department employees, including Reserve Bank, Insurance, Postal Department, Income Tax Department, and the GST and Kalal Tax Departments participate in this strike. In a similar trend, even the employees from state government departments such as revenue, commercial tax, rural development, etc., have also participated in this strike.

However, the strike has not affected the normal life in the state of Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation operated 90% of the normal buses with the help of the temporary employees, and the administration of the Anna Labourers Union. In some workshop depots, new drivers and conductors were appointed on a daily-wage basis.

At the same time, considering the priority to safety, buses to other states of Karnataka, Andhra, and Kerala were not operated.

As the strike is countrywide, the normal life in some states was completely disrupted. However, as far as the state of Tamil Nadu is concerned, normal life has not been affected. All public sector bank employees including the Reserve Bank of India except the State Bank of India participated in the strike. However, the Bank Officers’ Union has not participated in this strike. Thus, the daily banking service was affected by 50%.

The general secretary of the All India Bank Employees Union, C. H, Venkatachalam, informed that 40000 bank employees from Tamil Nadu and 4 Lakh employees throughout the country participated in this strike. Because of this, cheque transactions worth Rs, 20000 Crores were blocked. The strike is likely to continue.
