Pongal special buses from tomorrow - traffic diverted to ease congestion

Special advance booking counters have been set up in Chennai Koyambedu Outstation Bus terminus. The state transport minister inaugurated the commencement of booking counters.

Special buses will be operated for the Pongal festival from Chennai and other places from tomorrow (11th January). Some traffic diversion has been made in order to reduce traffic congestion.

The State Minister Vijayabhaskar shared the information that the government has been taking initiatives to operate special buses from various places for the benefit of the public. Accordingly, 26 advance booking counters have been set up in Koyambedu terminus. Including the booking centres Tambaram (MEPZ) -2, Madhavaram -1, and Poonamallee -1, a total of 30 advance booking counters have been set up.

These special buses will start operating from 11th January to 14th January. The advance booking counters will function from today (Thursday, 10th January) until 14th January. A holiday has been declared on 14th January by the state government.

Thus, a large number of the travelling public is expected, additional buses are set to be operated. A total of 14263 special buses including 5263 from Chennai are to be operated.

Apart from the above, 10445 buses will be operated to other places. Thus, a total of 24708 buses are set to be operated.

In order to reduce the traffic congestion, the buses are grouped into different categories and operated. For example, all buses leaving for Andhra will be operated from Madhavaram. All the buses moving via ECR will start from KK Nagar. Buses for Kumbakonam and Thanjavur will start from Tambaram (MEPZ).

Buses proceeding to Thiruvannamalai via Tindivanam will start from the Tambaram Railway Station Bus terminus. Buses going via Vellore, Hosur, Krishnagiri, and Arcot will start from Poonamallee.

For all other places and the southern Tamil Nadu districts, buses will start from the Chennai Koyambedu outstation bus terminus.

Some diversions in the traffic routes have been made in order to reduce traffic congestion. Accordingly,  a special bus station has been set up in Oorambakkam.

The passengers who have booked tickets can start from here. For the other passengers travelling by cars, etc., are instructed to avoid the Tambaram-Perungalathur route and go via Thirukkazhukkundram-Chenigleput or Sriperumpudhur route.

Arrangements have also been made to operate special buses after the Pongal festival conclusion to facilitate return journeys.

Last year,  a total of 4.92 Lakhs passengers had travelled or the Pongal occasion to their native places.  Revenue of Rs, 17.47 Crores was earned.
