Renovation of Saidapet Bridge to take place soon

Saidapet in south Chennai is a very important locality and the residents of Chennai would have been familiar with the bridge across Adyar River in this Saidapet. This bridge in Saidapet is called as Maraimalai Adigalar Bridge is the oldest bridge across Adyar River is well known. The news is this popular bridge would be renovated and an amount of Rs 43 lakhs would be spent for this purpose. This is now spoken by many. Renovation works includes painting, completion of footpath and installation of grills on the top of the parapets.

It is now clear as per the sources from the Highways department that the contractor would have a time of 3 months to complete the works and the funds would be got from the Adyar River Restoration project. The height of the footpaths has gone up and for the safety of the pedestrians, installation of stainless steel grid would be carried out.

It was pointed out by an official that painting and beautification have been necessitated since the Chennai Metro has also finished its work near the bridge.  Many government offices are present in the Panagal building is known. The point is portions of the footpath near the Panagal building plus on the Taluk office side would be completed. Public Works and Revenue departments grabbed many eyeballs recently when they got involved in the removal of encroachments under the bridge. An official explained about how the encroachments weakens the structure and do not allow free flow of water. Even after the removal of encroachments they come back again and again. He pointed out the presence of cattle sheds underneath. As per another official it is clear that there were air-conditioners also in that place.

For the sake of the health of the bridge regular painting and maintenance were necessary and bed protection works are very important and they must be done. This was confirmed by former Highways engineer. He explained about how the regular water flow under the bridge would wash away the silt and sand from beneath. He finally threw light on how the bed protection works would ensure safety of the structures foundation.
