University of Madras or Madras University or MU is one of the popular universities in India. The latest news is from the month of April onwards arts and science students in the colleges affiliated to this university would have to pay 30% to 50% more semester examination fees.

For the postgraduate students, the fee has been increased from Rs 100 to Rs 150 now per theoretical paper and the undergraduate students would have to pay Rs 85 instead of Rs 65 from April onwards. The important point is the revised rates are applicable to the students studying in all 110 Madras University affiliated non-autonomous institutions. It must be noted that the other fees such as cost of the application forms, statement of marks, provisional and convocation certificate fees remain unchanged. It is known that every student on average writes 5 to 7 theoretical exams per semester.

The point is in the last 2 years there were some stiff opposition from the colleges and hence fee amount was not increased. This proposal has been pending for more than 2 years. Recently the decision to raise the fees of the semester examinations was approved by the university’s academic council and syndicate.

The important piece of news collected was the original proposal was much higher and the rates were reduced after detailed discussion. It was pointed out by the sources that the rates were fixed keeping in mind about the cost involved in conducting the exam and also on how much other state universities charge for the students.

According to a retired government college principal, most of the works related to the exams were carried out by the principal and by other designated staffs. The details of the students registered for the examinations were put together by the principal and designated staffs. He finally expressed his unhappiness about the hike in the fees for the students. The information gathered is University of Madras has not settled the remuneration payable to some of the individual colleges for April and November 2018 examinations till date. It was later pointed out by a syndicate member of Madras University that the entire remuneration was made online after demonetization and settlements were made in batches.
