To spruce up or improve the appearance, the work has been underway in the MRTS stations on the Beach-Velachery MRTS route and this has been confirmed by the officials in the Chennai division of southern railways.

It is well known that these MRTS stations have been used by many anti-social elements plus by many as public urinals. As a first step towards improving the appearance of these MRTS stations, security would be strengthened. To guard the first and ground floors of these stations, proposals have been made to engage private security. It was mentioned by a staff belonging to the railways that the second floor having platforms would be taken care by RPF or Railway Protection Force. As many as four security guards would be present at each MRTS station and salary of Rs 38,000 would be paid to each security guard. Around Rs 1.5 lakhs would be spent on the security guards in each station per month.

Leasing out to the station space to banks and other commercial establishments would be done once the stations get the much needed security. For this, railway board would be approached for the approvals. It must be noted that eateries have been opened at Tiruvanmiyur MRTS station. Space has been allotted to Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd at the Thirumailai MRTS station is known.

A senior official spoke about how there were lots of space in the stations near residential places, IT parks, malls and government offices and how the present rents are not viable for the contractors because of low footfalls. He hinted that board’s approval would be sought for the purpose of relaxing these rates as special cases. For the last few months, MRTS stations have been inspected by Mr. Mahesh, Chennai divisional railway manager or DRM and his team of officials is known. An official commented about how the inspection was not done previously by other DRMs. He added that the funds are being allocated for the improvement.
