The Chennai residents are happy now as the vegetable prices have reduced in the last one week.

It has been little more than one week since the vegetable market at Thirumazhisai was opened and now the prices of veggies have gone down. It is now revealed by some vendors that the prices of few veggies might go up again by 10 to 15 percent due to shortage of vegetables arriving at the new market.

Vegetable truck loads were received by the Thirumazhisai market from Sunday. This has lead to the reduction in the rates of then vegetables. As per Mr. Sukumaran, secretary, Koyambedu Wholesale Market Merchant’s Association, from the day of opening the Thirumazhisai market has been receiving steady supply of farm produce as expected.

This has reduced the rise in the prices of the vegetables. He added that in another few days the rates of veggies like broad beans, tomatoes might increase due to shortage. The summer heat has been making the vegetables to dry up.

The current prices of vegetables in Thirumazhisai market are onions (Rs 15-Rs 20 per kg), tomatoes at Rs 15 per kg, beans (Rs 40–Rs 60 per kg), broad beans at Rs 30 per kg, cabbage at Rs 10 per kg, ladies finger at Rs 20 per kg. Many complaints have been received from the vendors of this new market about the availability of basic facilities as promised by the authorities. From the day the new market started, frequent power cuts were present here. Lack of proper shelter was also pointed out by some vendors.
