Vaigai water to be released

Following requests from the farming community in Madurai and Dindigul districts, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has ordered water to be released from the Vaigai dam from Monday. The water storage on Sunday in the dam was 1.8 tmcft. The total capacity of the dam is 6 tmcft.
‘The shutters of the dam would be opened on Monday to help the ayacut areas of both districts. About 1,793 acres in Dindigul and 43,248 acres in Madurai will be benefited. The Vaigai dam has received a good inflow of water recently, as a result of the heavy rain in the catchment areas of the Periyar river. Vaigai gets water from the Mullaperiyar dam on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border’, said officials.
