In a momentous decision, the Coastal Regulation Zone of the Central Government has granted its consent for the construction of a remarkable monument to commemorate the late DMK patriarch, M Karunanidhi. The proposed monument, taking the form of a pen, is set to be erected approximately 360 meters from the shoreline, floating amidst the tranquil waters of the Bay of Bengal near Marina Beach. To facilitate access, a footbridge will be constructed, linking the memorial to the mainland.

With an estimated budget surpassing Rs 80 crore, the monument`s construction marks a significant undertaking. The Environmental Expert Assessment Committee of the Central Government meticulously reviewed the Tamil Nadu Government`s application and expressed their acceptance, while the Coastal Regulatory Commission has also granted its permission. However, the approval comes with adherence to 15 specific conditions, emphasizing the importance of preserving the coastal ecosystem and ensuring environmental sustainability.

Armed with the necessary clearances, the Tamil Nadu government has wasted no time and intends to commence construction promptly. The decision to embark on this ambitious project reflects the deep respect and admiration the state holds for the late DMK leader, recognizing his indelible contributions to politics and society.
