Easing the heavy traffic congestion at Kilambakkam through the construction of a flyover in GST Road!!

There is very heavy traffic congestion now after the opening of the Kilambakkam bus terminus or Kalaignar Centenary Bus terminus or KCBT in the southern part of Chennai.
In this scenario, NHAI or National Highway Authority of India is now studying the possibility of constructing a flyover on the GST Road- iyyencherry Road Junction.
It must be taken into account that after the opening of Kelambakkam bus terminus the vehicular movement has slowed down and this despite widening GST Road into 8 lane thoroughfare and construction of a flyover at Vandalur junction etc. The NHAI sources explained that in the recent meeting it was decided to construct a flyover to ease traffic congestion even though the elevated corridor from Perungalathur to Chengalpet would be coming up soon. It must be noted that the officials want the flyover to be constructed on priority basis.
Undertaking flyover construction in the live traffic is a huge challenge and this was mentioned by NHAI. Multiple studies would have to be carried out before starting the construction work.
Information collected is that State transport corporations and omni buses operate1700 to 1800 services from the bus terminus on the weekdays and 200 plus services during weekends. In addition, MTC also operates 1700 buses everyday from the new bus terminus at Kilambakkam. As many as 2386 bus services pass through this new bus terminus is known. Beneath the Vandalur flyover, both mofussil and omni buses take U turns and enter KCBT. It must be noted that MTC buses leaving the bus terminus take U turns at the GST Road- iyyencherry road junction. Point to be noted is that as many buses take U turns now traffic pileup has now become very common here during peak hours.
There would be delay in construction of the 6lane elevated corridor from Tambaram to Chengalpet on the GST road that was proposed for Rs 3500cr. It has been brought out by sources that NHAI has already started work on the double tier elevated corridor on Chennai Port to Maduravoyal at a cost of Rs 5510 crores. The NHAI officials have mentioned that DPR for the 94km Tambaram -Tindivanam stretch has been completed on the GST Road.
It is now mentioned that Rs 3523 cr would be spent to construct an elevated corridor between Tambaram and Chengalpet and it would have entry and exit ramps in Kilambakkam bus terminus, Potheri near SRM College and Mahindra World City.
