Ideal food items for those are on night shift duty

Our body structure is devised only to be up and awake doing work during the day time and then relax and sleep in the night. However, in today’s work needs, lifestyle, and economic situation, many people attend continuous night-shift duties.

For the night duty job, the person’s habits, routines, food items should be conducive and cooperative with special care taken. Here are a few suggestions:

The persons attending night duty must take dinner including items just like the nutritious breakfast. Most people tend to take dinner rather late with a view that they should not feel hungry in the other half of the night. This is not good. It is ideal to take dinner between 7.30 PM and 8.00 PM.

It is also better to avoid taking excessive food during dinner. Fibre-rich food such as cooked rice, sambar or ‘kuzhambu’ made with pulses (split Bengal gram or green gram) or roasted chicken. These will tend to keep one away from feeling sleepy.

While keeping awake in the night periods, the body tends to develop a sort of dryness. It is better to take a spoon of ghee (clarified butter) to overcome this.

It is also advisable to avoid taking items fried in oil before the night shift. As the digestion system ends to relax during the night periods, it would rather be difficult these sort of items. Further, taking oily food affects the stomach as well. Also, there is the possibility to put on weight and become fatter.

The feeling of hunger would be more intense during the nights. However, it is better to avoid taking food items like samosa, burger, etc.. for this. Instead, it would be better to take a limited quantity of almonds, cashew nuts, etc. These would help maintain uniform body weight. These items will also help overcome the urge to take snack items.

It is rather the general tendency for the night shift personnel to keep drinking tea or coffee at regular intervals during the night shift. However, it is better to take some water or fruit juices.

The night shift personnel can better take food items such as fruits, vegetables, juices, wheat bread, raisins (dried grapes), grain-based salads, fried grins, cheese, low-fat milk, boiled eggs, fish, chicken sandwiches, etc.
