Surveillance cameras to be installed in city subways

Several subways and over-bridges have been constructed in Chennai in all heavy traffic roads in order to reduce traffic congestion.

Some of the important subways in the city include the subway in  Rajajai road near the Beach Station,  the subway in Tondiarpet on Thiruvotriyur High Road, the subways near Perambur railway stations, the subway located in Marina near Ezhilagam, and the subway near the Kamaraj statue.

Many of the subways are occupied by vendors selling items such as vegetables, fruits, cloths, snack items, and toys. They block the subway preventing the public from crossing through the subway quickly.

During the nights, the subways are occupied by drunkards affecting the safety of women who use the subway.

Chennai Mayor, Saidai Duraiswamy informed while presenting this year’s budget that surveillance comers will be installed in these subways for better monitoring and removing the unauthorised occupation and unruly elements in the subways.

Subsequently, activities have been initiated by Chennai corporation for installation of surveillance cameras.

Senior administrators and the Police department are consulted for this project.
Decisions regarding the location and operation of the surveillance cameras and the location of the control centre (whether in the nearest police station or the corporation office?) are being taken after these consolations. After the consolation, a tender for installation of surveillance cameras and necessary lighting will be floated.

Once the inspection of the tenders is completed and the order awarded, the surveillance cameras and the lights will be installed within 15 days and would function immediately.

The surveillance cameras would be extremely helpful to locate incidents of eve-teasing, occupation of subway space and other hardships faced by women and enable the Police Department to book and conduct enquiries punish the culprits.
