Emergency no. 112 to be introduced in March 2019

The central governments plan of introducing a unique emergency call number 112 throughout the country is being introduced in Tamil Nadu.

There are many such emergency numbers available for the public:

  • Police 100
  • Ambulance -108
  • Help for children - 1098
  • Help for Senior Citizens 1253
  • Fire-fighting 101

However, this has led to some confusion among the public. Further, BSNL which undertakes the services has to meet considerable expenses apart from deployment of personnel.

Hence, the central government has now decided to introduce one common unique number for emergency calls throughout the country.

The above service, 112, is set to be introduced in Tamil Nadu in March. The higher officials of the office of the DGP explained in this regard that for emergency calls, the number 911 is used in the USA. 112; is used in Australia and other countries. This single number can answer to all requirements. Help will come forth. In a similar fashion, the central government planned to adopt the unique emergency number throughout the country,

In Tamil Nadu, 100 is used for Police, and mobile Apps have been introduced for women safety Kavalan-SOS, and Kavalan Dial 100. A special computerized central service centre has been set up in Chennai Egmore for this service at a cost of Rs. 11.43 Crores. Presently, the emergency calls made for 112 are also being handled here. The facility to call 112 is possible even when there is no SIM card in the cell phone or even if there is no signal. The call may be made to 112. Or, even by pressing the Power Button 3 times. In an ordinary cell phone, even if the numbers 5 or 8 are pressed continuously, the call will land in the central control room.

The service of 112 is set to be implemented in Tamil Nadu in March 2019.
