Healthy Simili Balls Recipe

When we talk about traditional recipes, often times, it is misconceived that they are tough to prepare and requires the nuances of our grandma! Breaking your concerns, here we present to you a healthy snack called Simili. Wondering if you have ever tasted it, but you should for all of its calcium content and source of rich iron. This dish is recommended for all those who suffer anemia and poor levels of hemoglobin. Having just 2 or 3 Simili balls or Simili Urundai will help you improve your overall health condition. For lactating mothers, this is an excellent snack that boosts milk supply.

Let us jump into the recipe and learn how to make it the easy way

Required ingredients

  • Ragi flour – 1.5 cups
  • Peanuts – ¾ cup
  • Jaggery – ¾ cup
  • Sesame seeds – 2 tbsp  
  • Salt – a pinch
  • Ghee or gingelly oil – as required to make Ragi Roti.

Cooking Method

  • Take a pan and dry roast peanuts until they turn golden brown in color.
  • Remove the skin and keep aside.
  • Likewise, roast sesame seeds in a pan. You will find the seeds getting sputtered as you roast – worry not! After frying, let it cool down to room temperature.
  • Next, dry roast the Ragi flour in very low flame. Keep stirring continuously. As you get the aroma of Ragi flour, you can understand that it is roasted.
  • Take a roasted Ragi flour in a bowl and add salt.
  • Keep adding warm water in little quantities and make a soft, fine dough out of the flour like you make Chapathis.
  • With the dough, make 4 or 5 balls of equal sizes.
  • Heat a Dhosa Tawa and add oil.
  • Flatten the prepared Ragi balls on the Tawa using wet hands (wet your hands with water so that the dough doesn’t get stuck on your fingers). Flatten into thin Rotis and cook it in the Tawa by adding oil or ghee. Flip it the other side and cook it as well.
  • Similarly, cook all the balls and keep them aside.
  • Take all the cooked Ragi Rotis now and let it cool down to room temperature.
  • Now, split the rotis into small pieces and toss them into a mixer jar and grind into a powder.
  • To this, add roasted sesame seeds and groundnuts and again grind for a few seconds.
  • Transform this into a plate and make balls out of it.
  • Go on and enjoy having this Simili balls!

This is an excellent evening snack and can also be kept in your kid’s snack box for schools. They are sweet as well as tasty. So, your kids will never hesitating munching on the dumplings.
