Pongal season has started in Tamil Nadu and this is the time for bull taming sport ‘Jallikattu’. On Tuesday, 15th of January 2019, this year’s first jallikattu took place at Avaniapuram in Madurai and made many heads turn. The jallikattu saw as many as 476 bulls and 550 bull tamers and grabbed many eyeballs. The point is the jallikattu was conducted by the district administration as directed by Madurai bench of the Madras High court.

Many important personalities like dist rict collector Mr. S. Natarajan, city police commissioner of Madurai, Mr. Davidson Devasirvatham plus few representatives from Animal Welfare Board of Indian made their presence felt. As many as 8 rounds took place in the jallikattu and 75 bull tamers tried their best to tame the bulls in presence of the crowd. By taming the bulls, the bull tamers would be entering into the second round is known. It must be noted that in this jallikattu some bulls were so aggressive and could not be tamed whereas other bulls were tamed by the tamers. The audience who witnessed the jallikattu were disappointed when bulls ran past the arena without much action.

This bull taming event was not without any issues and as many as 44 people got injured. Out of these 36 persons including bull tamers, handlers and public were treated in the nearest primary health centre. For tertiary care purpose, as many as 8 badly injured persons were admitted to the Government Rajaji hospital for treatment. The good news is these 8 persons are fine and are out of danger. The news gathered is when compared to the previous years, 2019 saw less number of people witnessing the jallikattu event. The bulls were brought to this event from many places like Madurai, Erode and Salem etc is known. It is revealed that due to absence of many locals the prize money given was also less and this had disappointed both the bull owners and tamers.

The amazing piece of information is a person named Thirunavukkarasu, a private bank employee, tamed as many as 9 bulls and he was announced as the best bull tamer.
