Though the phenomenon of oil pulling has attracted huge popularity and being spoken about, in India, oil pulling has already been explained in great detail in the old Siddha and Ayurvedic medical systems and was followed using sesame or gingelly oil (nallennai in Tamil) around 1000 years ago!

In the Ayurvedic system, the early-morning habits of oil-pulling gargling and also applying mascara to the eyes have been specially mentioned as health-beneficial.

The system of filling a liquid full in the mouth and gargling is called as kavalakandoosham and the system of filling any liquid up to a half of the mouth and gargling is called as kavalagraham. Further, only sesame oil is used in the Ayurvedic system. However, during the present times, foreigners are propagating the practice of oil pulling using coconut oil.

Generally, when we feel any uneasiness or discomfort in the throat, we use salt water or oil and gargle. In a similar, the daily habit of doing oil pulling using sesame oil for gargling stimulates the best functioning of our sense organs. The toxic elements stuck between the teeth will get removed and thereby preventing halitosis (bad smell from the mouth) while enhancing the function of tasting the food!

Bitterness in the mouth, loss of appetites, and such complaints will get automatically attended. Complaints like neck pain, neck sprain, throat pain, ear pain, the flowing nose can be cured by regular oil pulling. Te betel-leaf marks on the teeth after chewing them and the yellow traces in the teeth will get removed leaving the teeth white and shining! Also, the sensitive teeth caused by bad teeth and blood-oozing in the gums will get cured.

The oil pulling procedure

Sit in a place of sunlight and good ventilation/air flow and give a massage to the neck and shoulders with hot water.

Keep the liquid either full mouth (kandoosham) or half the mouth (kavalagraham) and do it (oil pulling exercise) either way/ It need not be strictly kept for an hour you can do it when the liquid gets partly solidified into a paste former start doing when the water runs from the nose!

Apart from sesame oil and coconut oil, other liquids such as milk, fruit juices, honey, or cow urine. However, sesame oil is the best! As honey has the properties of healing irritation, wounds, and swelling, it may also be used.

This is the way explained in the Ayurvedic medicinal system. If it is not possible in the systematic procedure as explained above, even keeping the liquid for a few minutes in the mouth and gargling will also yield the health benefits!
