Posted on: 27/Dec/2018 10:23:37 AM
Many people travel through OMR or Old Mahabalipuram Road to go to Mahabalipuram and Puducherry. These people would certainly feel happy now. It is said that the travel time to Mahabalipuram and Puducherry would be reduced by as much as 30 minutes. Two 6-lane bypass roads at Kelambakkam and Thiruporur would be constructed and by this the highly congested Kelambakkam and Thiruporur junctions could be avoided, time could be saved. The connectivity to ECR and OMR link roads would also be provided by these two bypass roads. Tamil Nadu Road Development Company, TNRDC would be starting the above mentioned works and an amount of Rs 201 crores would be spent on this.

It is known that the phase-2 widening of OMR between Siruseri and Poonjeri is delayed because of issues in the acquisition of lands. The point is TNRDC has commenced the bypass works at this scenario as Kelambakkam and Thiruporur junctions witness heavy traffic congestions during office hours. The information that was gathered was the vehicles get piled up for about 2 to 3 km at the junctions during the weekends and on holidays. This is due to the fact that OMR has link roads to both GST road and ECR. At Pudur on the OMR, the proposed Kelambakkam bypass road would begin and end at Thaiyur village covering a distance of 4.67 km and it would not touch the Kelambakkam junction. The 7.45 km long Thiruporur bypass road would connect Kalavakkam village with Thandalam avoiding the Thiruporur junction.

According to a senior official belonging to TNRDC, the bypass road from Pudur would pass through Kelambakkam- Kovalam Road and Thiruporur bypass would connect with Thiruporur- Nemmeli Road. Without entering the Kelambakkam and Thiruporur junctions, the motorists from Mahabalipuram and Kelambakkam on ECR could reach OMR.

Soil road has been formed for about 1km at Kalavakkam and Pudur villages along the OMR and this is as a part of the road work. The road would pass through Padur, Kelambakkam, Thaiyur, Kalavakkam, Thiruporur and Thandalam villages. This would be possible with a major bridge and with 2 minor bridges. The important piece of information is the 33 m width six-lane dual carriageway bypass would have 10.5 m carriageway on both sides. This would be along with 1.5 m paved shoulder and 2 metre earthen shoulder for the two wheelers and pedestrians.

The official later revealed that for the locals as well as for the college students of Pudur, a pedestrian underpass would come up at Hindustan College of Engineering at Pudur and vehicular underpass at Kovalam road would provide connectivity to the ECR. There would be openings at the medians at 2 locations on the 4.67 km Kelambakkam bypass. The sources have confirmed that the Thiruporur bypass would get openings at the medians at OMR Amla, SARE apartment and salt factory.
