9 Successive holidays for schools and colleges

As the state government has declared a holiday on 14th January, the eve of Pongal festival, there is the special occurrence of 9 successive holidays for school students and teachers.

Pongal festival is being celebrated from 15th to 17th January. It was expected that if 14th January, the eve of Pongal is declared as a holiday, it would facilitate the public to visit their native places by travel. Accordingly, the state government has declared that 14th January would be a holiday and 9th February (Saturday) would be a working day in lieu of this.

With this announcement, there is a chance for 9 successive holidays for all school students and teachers, only 18th January happens to be a working day in the sequence of holidays. In other words, when the schools are set to be closed for Pongal days after the working day on Friday, 11th January, the next day, Saturday, 12th January is a holiday National Youth Day. 13th January is a Sunday.  15th January is the Pongal festival. 16th January is Thiruvalluvar Day. 17th January is Uzhavar Thirunal (Farmers Festival). The subsequent Friday, 19th January, happens to be the only working day for the schools and colleges, As 19th and 20th January are Saturday,  Sunday, the schools will reopen only on 21st January.

Thus, during the above sequence of holidays, if the students take leave on 18th January (Friday), there is the instance of 9 successive holidays from 12th January to 20th January. Because of this, the students, parents of the students, and the teachers planning a trip to their native places are delighted indeed!
