It was not so long after the reopening of schools of Pongal Holidays that the JACTO-GEO (Joint Action Committee of Tamil Nadu Teachers Organization-Government Employees Organization) have gone on an indefinite strike starting from Tuesday. As they went on strike, the Chief Secretary has prompted the employees that severe action will be taken against those who go on strike.

In their announcement about the strike, JACTO-GEO has stated that the strike will involve over 10 lakh members including 175 employees belonging to workers union.

Reports from the JACTO-GEO states that they will go on strike unless their requests are full-filled. Their pleas include reversing contributory pension scheme, pay out the arrears as per Pay Commission recommendation, spike in salary for teachers handling secondary school to the range of salary drawn by central government counterparts.

Girija Vaidyanathan, the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary announced to the district government offices and department heads that the strike badly affects the normalcy in functioning of government offices. The strike is a kind of violation of the TN Government Servants Conduct Rules. Such an absence to work will be termed unauthorized and this will cause pay cuts, she adds. Furthermore, all those who draw daily wages and get consolidated payouts and be a part of the strike shall get fired.

Not a promising one

In their strike, the JACTO-GEO representatives had an opportunity to meet D. Jayakumar, the Fisheries Minister and submit their detailed demands. The meeting however was ended not much satisfactory as there was no assurance on demand given by the minister.

Those belonging to the 3 government employees association had not have decided to be a part of the strike. According to reports, the Tamil Nadu Secretariat Association, the Tamil Nadu Government Officials Association and the Tamil Nadu Government Officials Union have jointly met the Chief Secretary and placed their demands with them. She gave assurance that the requests will be considered and necessary actions be taken following which the three unions decided not to be a part of the strike.
