The significance of the number on the cyclone warning cone

The cyclone warning cone bearing the number 10 was set up at the Port of Nagapattinam after a gap of 40 years because of the cyclone Gaja.

Generally, the cyclone warning cones are set up in ports to inform about the intensity of the cyclone. Different numbers are given to the cones as under:

1. The ambience leading to the formation of a low-pressure zone

2. Cyclone has formed.

3. The climate is conducive to sudden strong winds and rain.

4. The climate conditions in the port area are rather bad.

5. The cyclone will cross the coast towards the left of the port.

6. The cyclone will cross the coast towards the right of the port.

7. The storm will cross the coast through the port. The port will encounter very severe bad weather condition.

8. Climate will be bad towards the left side of the port.

9. Climate will be bad towards the right side of the port.

10. A very severe cyclone has formed. Excessive damage will be caused by the cyclone in the port and its neighbourhood.

11.  This is the most severe warning. The communication link with the weather centre will get completely cut off. This is an indication of very severe damage to the area affected by the cyclone.
