Cyclone Gaja: Chennai rains to fade away, to return by November 21

Cyclone Gaja lashed Tamil Nadu with heavy rains during the last 24 hours, but the state capital of Chennai escaped the fury of the storm. The city only managed with light showers, with few intense spells over some isolated pockets.
In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Minambakkam Observatory recorded 7 mm of rains, while Nungambakkam settled with 2 mm only.
Now, with Cyclone Gaja weakening and moving away, Chennai rains would now fade away but chances of isolated showers cannot be ruled out. According to weathermen, weather in Chennai would now become dry for the next four to five days.
However, this is not all, the city is likely to see another spell of good rains next week. Weather models are indicating towards formation of a fresh weather system in Bay of Bengal, which would be moving towards Tamil Nadu that too near Chennai.
The system is presently seen as a cyclonic circulation marked over Malaya Peninsula. The circulation is travelling in favourable weather conditions and is in the process of getting more marked.
Moving in west-northwest direction, the cyclonic circulation is likely to induce a low pressure area by November 19-20 and further a well-marked low pressure area. However, whether it would transform into a depression or not we will have to wait and watch.
But the system would be instrumental in bring moderate rains with some heavy spells over Chennai by November 21-22.
Although November is the rainiest month for Chennai, rains have remained far and few this time. In fact, delayed onset of Northeast Monsoon had already kept the rain on the lower side this time. Talking about the cumulative rainfall for Chennai is largely deficit by 59%, with city recording 200 mm of rains from October 1 to November 15, against the normal of 489 mm.
