With the revised alignment of the Metro Phase-2 network, it is understood that the project will encompass more ground area and is going to have many stations. On the whole, there is going to be 128 stations across 118.9km network.

To start with, the 2 corridors covering Madhavaram to CMBT, and then Madhavaram to Sholinganallur will be covered. In another few months, tenders for the same shall get floated and necessary works shall kick-start by year end, according to sources.

Soon, funds from centre are likely to be received. The project works have already started and the necessary documents to acquire funds to this project are being looked at. These will get approved soon.

There was a request placed by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami requesting the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to approve a joint venture of 50:50 wherein the centre shall provide a sum of Rs 11,100 crore for a period of 6 years.

While the phase-1 project was started only upon receiving funds from the centre, the phase-2 project of CMRL is not so. Necessary funds for beginning the project are already available, and the first portion of JICA loan is likely to be received soon. With that being received, the project will be rolled out. Also the funds from centre are likely soon too.

The phase-2 network was originally proposed to be of 108km with 108 stations, but it is now revised to 128 stations across 118.9km stretch.

Alapakkam junction, Kamaraj Garden Street close to Medavakkam, Chennai Bypass near Sri Ramachandra Hospital, DLF IT SEZ, etc. are some of the stations newly included.

Out of the total number of 128 stations, 80 of them will be elevated ones and 48 as underground stations. Having increased the total number of stations, in a few areas, one can find stations at very close distance of just lesser than a kilometer distance.

Currently, detailed designing of these stations are being carried out. There will be closer details of the project in these documents. Once the designing work gets over, the necessary minor changes shall be done, if required.
