About 10 crores passengers per year would be handled by the proposed new airport at Parandur. There would be 2 runways, terminal buildings, taxiways, apron and cargo terminal plus maintenance and other needed infrastructure etc.

In 2008, guidelines for Greenfield airport were released by the Civil Aviation Ministry. It is now said that the application would be made soon with the committee functioning under the Union Civil Aviation Ministry to get site clearance for the finalised site. It would be in accordance with the guidelines for the Greenfield airport.

Once clearance for site was obtained, then acquisition of land and preparation of the project report for the Greenfield airport would be considered. The Union Civil Aviation Ministry would play its role in providing in-principle approval as well as the permission for the operation of the airport.

It is worthy to note that the current airport at Chennai handles 2.2 crores passengers per year and in the next 7 years it would be handling 3.5croers passengers per year once the existing expansion works gets over. The important piece of information is that the existing airport at Meenambakkam as well the new Greenfield airport at Parandur would be operated simultaneously.
