The news that has come out is that the TN government has proposed to reduce energy charges for EV charging stations by 50% from 8am to 4pm. By this, the charging during the non peak hours would be incensitised and renewable usage of energy would be promoted.
To support the growth of public charging stations, the government must revise the demand and energy tariffs with approval from TNERC. This was as per the new EV policy 2023. It is learnt that for the first 2 years the existing demand charges would be rescued by 75percent and in the subsequent 2 years by 50percent. The government seeks to reduce the energy charges by 50% from 8am to 4pm.
The move to reduce energy charges for EV charging stations in the daytime was to ensure the use of solar energy. This was according to a senior officer from Tangedco. He spoke about how there is now more solar generation during the day and how it was cheap also. By the tariff reduction, the EV users would be encouraged to charge their vehicles in the morning hours with the help of solar power. The charging of EV in the evenings and at night would be avoided.
The supply of renewable energy must be ensured to the public or private charging stations and this was mentioned in the policy.
It must be taken into account that TN state has introduced renewable energy based Green Tariff for HT services and it would be an additional 10% over HT categories tariffs. For charging EVs. The EV charging service providers should be encouraged to set up their own renewable energy generating stations at their premises. It was later brought out by Solar Suresh or Mr. Dwarakdas Suresh that the govt must insist the public charging stations set up their own renewable energy charging stations.
