After about one year of pause, the preliminary works to construct underground stretch of Chennai metro rail in Anna Salai have got started.
This contract of the Chennai metro rail limited is handed over as contract to Afcons Infrastructure Limited. the company is already carrying out tunneling works in several other places of the city. In another ten months, tunneling works from government estate AG-DMS should be completed. This project is worth Rs 350 crore.

These machines have been idle for almost one year. For the tunneling works to begin, it may take one week or two, officials said. Works to start stations in the same stretch will need some more time to begin and tender is not awarded too.
According to sources from L&T should be awarded the contract. There are talks on the go with L&T for some time now. Contract will be awarded very soon, said officials.
Tunneling works works by Afcons are complete in the remaining parts of Anna Salai stretch (from AG-DMS to Saidapet) last year. Works to construct stations in this stretch are being carried out by L&T.
This contract worth Rs 1947 crore to construct station and tunnel along the entire stretch from Government Estate to Saidapet are given to Gammon India and Russian firm Mosmetrostroy in 2011.
During last May, the project by Mosmetrostroy was suddenly stopped due to financial issues Following this, the contract with Gammon was also terminated because of tardy progress.
