The prototype Metro Train Engine was opened for public view at the CMBT in Koyambedu Bus terminal. Because of the on-going election activities, the function was conducted without much fanfare.
Chennai Metro Rail Project has been taken up at a cost of Rs, 14,600 Crores. There will be 2 corridors for a total distance of 45.1 km. The 2 corridors are Washermanpet to Chennai Airport and Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount. 42 trains will run on these 2 corridors.
42 Metro trains (with 4 coaches each) are procured at the cost of Rs. 1,471.3 Crores These are manufactured by the Brazil Company, Alstom..
The first 9 trains were to be manufactured at Brazil and the rest at Tada Sri City in Andhra Pradesh. The first 6 trains have already arrived at Chennai by ship. The balance from Brazil is expected by 29th March.
The contract with Alstom included the manufacture of a prototype engine. This prototype engine attached with one coach has been displayed at CMBT railway station. Metro Officials declared it open on Monday, 24th march.
Because of the on-going election activities, the function was conducted without much fanfare. As per the schedule, trains will start running between Koyambedu & Alandur from October, 2014. All trains are expected to be available at Chennai before end March.
Test run was completed on one track. Test run for the second track will be conducted in 1 or 2 days. Th track between Shenoy Nagar, & Anna Nagar is also completed. The work on the elevated corridor is also nearing completion.
6 trains from Brazil and 1 train from Tada, Andhra Pradesh are kept at Koyambedu Workshop. Another 2 trains are expected by 29th March.
