NORTH CHENNAI COAST LESS VULNERABLE TO TSUNAMI.

J Radhakrishnan, Assistant Director [Head Disaster Management], UNDP India was speaking in the inaugural function of the International workshop on Local Climate and disaster resilience in Chennai. He said that the structures built on north Chennai coastline as a part of protecting the shores from erosion made the North Chennai coastline Tsunami resistant. Earlier Madras University has prepared a study paper titled’ Tsunami Vulnerability Atlas of Chennai’. The atlas was a part of a project funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The project involved detailed study of the coast line starting from Pulikat Lake to Kovalam. The study has indicated that the Coastline from Ennore to Kasimedu fishing harbor is safer. The coastline Coovam River to Kovalam is vulnerable to Tsunami. The five elements – physical, social, economic, institutional and natural of all the zones of the Corporation were considered for data collection.
